For many New Jersey drivers, a windshield claim costs far less than they expect — sometimes nothing. Whether yours is covered comes down to what’s on your policy and whether the job is a repair or a replacement.
It starts with comprehensive coverage
Glass damage is handled under the comprehensive part of your auto policy, the same coverage that pays for things like theft, storms, and hitting a deer. Comprehensive is optional in New Jersey, but if you have a loan or lease, or you added it for peace of mind, you likely have it. Liability-only policies generally won’t cover your own glass.
Repairs vs. replacements
Here’s the part that surprises people. Many insurers treat chip repairs differently from full replacements:
- Chip repair is frequently covered with no deductible. Insurers would rather pay for a small repair today than a whole windshield after the chip spreads, so they often waive the deductible to encourage it.
- Full replacement is usually subject to your comprehensive deductible. If your deductible is higher than the cost of the glass, a claim may not be worth filing; if it’s lower, you pay the deductible and comprehensive covers the rest.
Worth knowing: unlike a few states that require insurers to replace windshields with zero deductible, New Jersey does not mandate free glass. What you pay depends on your own policy — your deductible and whether you carry comprehensive.
Full glass coverage
Some drivers add a full glass option to their policy. This waives the deductible on glass claims, including replacements, for a small addition to the premium. If you’ve had more than one windshield over the years, it can be worth asking your agent about.
Does a glass claim raise my rates?
Comprehensive glass claims are generally treated as no-fault events, so a single windshield claim typically has less rate impact than an at-fault accident. Policies vary, though, so if you’re concerned, ask your insurer how they handle it before you file.
How we make it easy
On covered claims we bill most major insurers directly, so you’re usually only responsible for a deductible if one applies. Have your insurance card and policy number ready when you call, and we’ll check what your coverage does and handle the paperwork.
This is general information, not insurance advice. Your policy is the final word on what’s covered.
